Horses are transported by rail, as a rule, over distances of at least 200 km in special or adapted covered freight cars. No more than 10-12 horses are loaded into one four-axle wagon. After loading, the doorways are closed with grilles.

Horses are placed along the longitudinal axis of the car, with their heads facing the interior space. In each half of the carriage, the horses are placed in two rows. Wagons for transporting horses are equipped with hitching boards and door tabs, they should contain shovels, brooms, buckets, a lantern, a veterinary first aid kit, first aid equipment. Mares and stallions are transported in different wagons uninhibited on a leash.

The amount of feed issued on the way is determined with the assumption that the train passes about 300 km per day, in addition to this amount of feed, a reserve for two days is issued. Horses are fed regularly two or three times a day.

Carriage with horses

Horses are watered during transportation at least once a day in winter and at least twice a day in summer. The daily rate of water consumption is 20-30 liters .

The materials for bedding are the same as in the stables: straw, sawdust, peat. Cleaning of manure from wagons is carried out once a day at stations (it must be agreed with the transport veterinary service). The release of manure from wagons during the movement of the train is strictly prohibited.

To accompany the horses on the way, the shipper allocates one conductor to each car (for breeding horses – two), who are obliged to place the horses in the cars, feed, water and look after the horses, as well as clean the cars. The senior conductor controls this process.

When the train is moving, the cars are ventilated, for this purpose the doors and windows on the downwind side (along the train) are left open. In summer, in hot weather, it is allowed to keep the doors and hatches open on both sides of the car. At low temperatures, the hatches are closed, leaving one door open.

  • Transportation of horses by road
  • Horse transportation

Transportation of horses is carried out in special or ordinary flatbed trucks, transportation of horses in dump trucks is unacceptable. Depending on the model of the car or semi-trailer, one unit of transport carries 10-24 horses.

To transport horses in the back of a truck, it needs to be prepared: wash, in some cases, disinfect, build a wooden flooring (so as not to spoil the body) or use a litter. The sides must be at least 1.5 m.

Horse in the car

In adverse weather conditions (heavy rain, wind, cold or heat), the body for transportation is equipped with an awning. Before loading, horses are divided by age, gender, and also take into account the purpose of the horse. Animals in the back are positioned with their heads forward along the course of the car and securely tied.

The speed of transportation depends on the type of road: 60 km/h on asphalt, 40 km/h on a cobblestone road, 25 km/h on a primer. The movement should be carried out without jerks, the range of transportation is 450-600 km, the duration is not more than a day.
